On
October 20, 2000, the Divinity School hosted a conference entitled "The
Sacred and the Sovereign: Human Rights, the Use of Force, and Religious
Pluralism at Century's Dawn," which brought leading scholars of religion
and politics into conversation with key figures from the U.S. State Department
and the Department of Defense. The focus of the forum was to examine critically
and constructively the role of religion and religious perspectives in
humanitarian intervention and the shifting tides of state sovereignty
in global political life.
The conference's extensive website is still active; it contains background information, speaker biographies, a useful bibliography, topical articles, as well as access to post-conference interviews and speaker reflections. Conference readers are also still available; to receive one, please email jquijano@midway.uchicago.edu with your contact information. A book based on the conference is forthcoming. (Check back here for more information as it becomes available).
