Meet the Fellows

The Chicago Forum on Pedagogy and the Study of Religion was created in 2001 with sponsorship from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. Originally designed as a three-year program of plenary talks, panel discussions, and graduate student workshops on issues surrounding the teaching of the academic subject of religion to undergraduates in a liberal arts environment, the forum has been extended until 2006 in the form of a yearly workshop designed to prepare advanced Ph.D. candidates in the Divinity School for the challenges of teaching about religion to undergraduates.

In 2005, the Marty Center published an overview of the initial three-year program in its occasional papers series (volume 2). The publication, which bears the same name as the forum, contains an introduction by Dean Richard A. Rosengarten and forum director Lucy K. Pick; the three Wabash Center lectures—by Jonathan Z. Smith, John Stratton Hawley, and Paul J. Griffiths—each of which considers the theme for that year; as well as essays by three graduate student fellows—Caroline Tolton, David Clairmont, and David Simmons—which reflect on questions raised during the three years of the forum.
